Jay is a superstar singer-songwriter, but music was not always what he intended to do. While pursuing a degree at the ‘London School of Medicine and Dentistry’, Jay started creating his own style of music and the rest is history. Years in honing his craft, the world took notice when his songs, ‘All or Nothing’ ‘Do You Remember’ and ‘Down’ became worldwide hits, where in 2009, ‘Down’, a collaboration with Lil’ Wayne, made him the first solo U.K. urban artist, and first South Asian solo artist, to reach number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the United States.
He became the first artist of South Asian descent to reach number one on the Hot 100, and simultaneously, also racked up nearly 70 million views on YouTube. Jay has been nominated for MOBO awards, and has received the BMI ‘Songwriter Award’ for three consecutive years. Additionally, he was the first South Asian to reach number one on the Latin Billboard charts, and his most recent single, ‘I’m All Yours’, reached number one in Japan.
During ANOKHI’s 10th Anniversary Awards Show on February 2nd, 2013, Jay sat down with me to chat about his new album, the reason for his hiatus & his thoughts on the current status of the music industry. Click above to watch what she had to say!
